What is Teaching Fellow?

Teaching Fellows are high school (juniors and seniors) or college students wishing to explore teaching as a future career path or to have meaningful impact with youth.

Each summer, Breakthrough Cincinnati will hire 60+ creative, hard-working, and inspired individuals to join our team for Summer Scholars Program. There, they will lead their own small, classrooms and create lesson plans. Learn more about Breakthrough Cincinnati’s “students teaching students” model here.

Not familiar with teaching? Not a problem! We pair you with an Instructional Coach, who is a professional teacher, to mentor you along the way. They will provide you strategies and tools to effectively manage a classroom. Lots of training and support are provided to make sure that you are successful and have a positive experience.

Expectations:

Teaching Fellows make a nearly eight-week commitment to the program, which consists of two weeks of training, five weeks of teaching, and half a week of wrap-up.

Teaching Fellows will:

  • Create lesson plans for one core course (i.e., math, science, history, or English language arts) and an academic elective (e.g., foreign language, dance, art).

  • Lead their own classroom.

  • Learn and practice classroom management and instructional strategies and receive feedback from professional teachers.

  • Work on a team to plan and lead special events.
