In the late '90s and early '00s, Angela first learned about Breakthrough from a friend. Among the many appealing aspects of Breakthrough, she was drawn to its mission of bridging students from one grade to the next through engaging activities, educational experiences, and exciting field trips. She also emphasized, "The BTC recruitment did not make me feel poor or disadvantaged. It was a welcoming place where my kids were just kids who had potential and could get help to reach the next step." Inspired by these promises, Angela enrolled her first child, Ivory Snow. And continued to enroll subsequent children over the next two decades.
“My children blossomed at Breakthrough. They felt encouraged to explore new things, knowing it was okay if success didn't come immediately."
As Angela’s three oldest children graduated from the program, they each embarked on careers in education, having initially been students at BTC and later serving as Teaching Fellows during their summers. Years later, the youngest three joined Breakthrough, and Angela continued to witness the same positive outcomes. She shared, “Many of my kids were quiet in their early years. The BTC staff and programs allowed students to build their confidence.” Nehemiah now performs in a local band; Zephaniah takes AP classes and actively participates in the bowling team and entrepreneurs club. Zachary is in college and pursues his passion for rapping and creating YouTube content.
“They were allowed the grace to be themselves and grow at their own pace.”
In Angela’s own words, "BTC doesn't let kids get written off. It is a program that believes in kids." This unwavering belief has been the cornerstone of the journey with countless Breakthrough families like Angela’s for over 30 years. By 2028, we plan to support more than 500-800 families; fostering academic and self- confidence in students and stewarding educational change in the tri-state area. As Angela shared, “Breakthrough Cincinnati is a protected place. Life can bring lots of uncertainty, but BTC is a level of support that can be counted on. My kids' needs and learning were always met.”
